After Helen Shivers (Gellar) wins a beauty pageaent, Julie Jones (Hewitt), Barry William Cox (Phillippe) and Ray Bronson (Prinze Jr.) are celebrating along with graduation on the 4th of July. The four friends go to a party and decide to head out to the beach in the middle of the night. On their way home, they hit and apparently kill a man who is walking in the road. They think he is dead and dump him into the waters. One year later they receive messages saying I know what you did last summer.
